Chapter Thirteen

Agatha was panicking.

“Do you think they saw us?”

“It won’t matter. Hayley and Roland are going to be tearing into them. They won’t be able to make sense of it. They might even think we ran around the building and came back in. It’s going to sound like complete gibberish to Anthony.”

As they drove away Jane swallowed hard. As much as she was doing her best to calm her sister, she was nervous too. This case was getting a little too close for comfort. The last thing she wanted was to wind up back at the police station. It was almost as bad as Guantánamo Bay detention camp. OK, maybe not that bad, but she’d seen a documentary on the TV about how they were treated with waterboarding and whatnot.

“We didn’t get to ask Roland about why his name tag pin was at the scene of the crime.”

“We’ll swing by there again later.”

“So where now?”

“We are going to pay Gillian Roberts a little visit.”

Gillian Roberts had moved to Crystal Cove six years ago. Instead of starting a brick-and-mortar restaurant, she had noticed that tourists grouped together down by the beach and yet there were few hotdog stands and whatnot. It was a fair distance to have to walk if you were hungry. She made tourists’ life easy by parking a converted RV down at the beach and turning it into a fast food stand. But this wasn’t a big development, it was just a simple RV, a nice-looking one. She had a graphics company create a big hotdog sticker that went the full length of the RV. It was a bit of an eyesore but the food was great. There were no complaints after the mayor started eating there. Jane had to wonder if he was getting some kind of kickback in the way of free food. It would also help to account for his size. The mayor wasn’t a skinny man even in his youth, but over the years he had packed on the pounds like they were going out of fashion.

“You think she could have done it?” Agatha asked.

“After seeing the type of people who have murdered in this town, I wouldn’t put it past anyone. Behind every evil is a smile. Look at Bundy.”

“Bundy? But he was a straight-up serial killer. You don’t think this person has killed more than one, do you?”

“Who knows? When they get a taste for it and see how easy it is to get away with murder they usually will do it again.”

“But Gillian?”

“Yeah, I think she could.”

The SUV crawled its way down into the beach area. The place was packed at this time of the year. Because of the
